Scientists who hope to unlock the mysteries of plant-based photosynthesis say they have come closer than ever before to proving the role of quantum mechanics in the process. Researchers from the University of California, Irvine, who used lasers in an effort to decipher anomalies they'd seen in the photosynthesis of green sulfur bacteria say the results suggest quantum coherence plays a role in how plants transfer energy efficiently.
