A small study of very low birth weight babies found that 55% of the infants contracted a rhinovirus-related acute respiratory illnesses, according to a report in the journal Pediatrics. The pathogen was associated with 40% of cases of bronchiolitis and 33% of hospitalizations, researchers noted. Babies hospitalized due to human rhinovirus were more prone to developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Researchers said the findings underline the need to enforce infection control protocols in neonatal ICUs.
