Thai Airways' frequent flyer program can be redeemed via all Star Alliance airlines, such as United Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines. The program is free to join and includes four tiers from entry-level purple to platinum.
Chilean-based LAN is boosting its presence in South America by rebranding Aires airline as LAN Colombia. LAN, which already operates subsidiaries in Peru, Argentina and Ecuador, expects to merge soon with Brazil's TAM. When approved, the merger will give the new airline more than 40% of the South American market.
Qantas Airways has switched Wi-Fi providers and now offers superfast connections at two of its airport lounges. The new provider is Optus and the service is available only at the lounges in Sydney and Brisbane, but the airline intends to install Optus at other key locations soon.
With the launch of Thai Smile, Thai Airways will offer a "light-premium airline" for travelers who aren't interested in low-fare or premium service. "I'm confident it will be competitive in the airline market," said Thai Airways President Piyasvasti Amranand.
