Veterinarian Kristen Bernard of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Veterinary Medicine is studying West Nile virus in the hopes of paving the way to a vaccine for people and animals. Dr. Bernard has found mosquito saliva leads to increased replication of the insect-borne virus, and the virus persists in an animal's brain long after the infection appears to be cleared.
