While dredging 1 million cubic yards of sand as part of a beach restoration project in the Gulf of Mexico, workers discovered two Kemp's ridley turtles, an endangered species, caught in one of the vacuum's screens, designed for salvaging any wildlife mistakenly taken into the machine. Gulf World veterinarian Lydia Staggs treated the animals for infections; one turtle had fluid in its lungs but both are doing well and are likely to be released in several weeks.
