A recent genetic study in golden retrievers found that mutations in the recessive gene PNPLA1 are associated with ichthyosis, a scaly skin condition in both dogs and humans that can be deadly in some forms in people. Inbreeding of dogs for certain desirable traits also propagates deleterious genes, but in this case, scientists used this problem in dogs to help find a clue to treating human disease.
