In light of the backlash against celebrity chef Paula Deen for withholding her status as a type 2 diabetic from her audience for three years – and not until she became a spokeswoman for Novo Nordisk’s Victoza® campaign – some critics are saying that celebrity endorsements may not be effective. However, John Kamp, executive director of the Coalition for Healthcare Communication, remarked that like it or not, the American public listens to celebrities. “If Paula Deen helps people recognize the dangers of diabetes, spurs people to pay attention, talk to their doctors and develop better eating habits, then good for her!” he said.
