Extracts of water apple leaf contain six flavonoid compounds that appeared to be more effective than certain diabetes medications in inhibiting the functions of carbohydrate hydrolysing enzymes, a study in Food Chemistry found. Researchers said the extracts were also able to stave off aldose reductase enzymes and prevent the formation of advanced glycation end products by 89%, which may help regulate the development of diabetes complications.
