A retrospective, multicenter study of 269 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis showed eight factors that correlate with kyphosis maintenance after surgery. In the journal Spine, researchers noted that increased kyphosis at follow-up was significantly associated with an anterior approach as well as elevated thoracic coronal curve.
The ANA and five other health care groups, submitted an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, backing the minimum health insurance coverage requirement in the Affordable Care Act. Emory University Hospital nurse Allison Batson donated one of her kidneys to Clay Taber, a 23-year-old patient who suffered complete kidney failure due to Goodpasture syndrome. The procedure was successfully conducted last week.
A survey of almost 7,500 nurses who were pregnant between 1993 and 2002 showed that those who handled chemotherapy drugs for more than an hour a day were twice as likely to miscarry than those who did not handle the drugs. The miscarriage rate among nurses who conducted X-rays was about 30% greater than among other nurses. The findings appear in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
