Memphis is on track to name a street after Martin Luther King Jr., who was fatally shot in the city in 1968. Of the approximately 900 cities that have streets bearing King's name, most are in the South, according to East Carolina University geography professor Derek Alderman. "Street naming can be a pretty powerful way of honoring somebody when you consider the way streets connect people. A significant amount of the actual mechanics of protest and the mechanics of carrying out the civil rights movement was actually carried out in street level protests and marches," Alderman said.
