Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport travelers now have 250 new iPads at their disposal at three of the airport's restaurants. The tablets will allow them to order food for quick delivery and browse social media, check e-mail or watch the news while they eat. The project is a joint development between Delta Air Lines and airport restaurateur OTG.
The European Union's emissions-trading scheme, which requires airlines to pay a fee for flying to or from Europe, has hit turbulence with China refusing to participate. "China will not cooperate with the European Union on the ETS, so Chinese airlines will not impose surcharges on customers relating to the emissions tax," said Cai Haibo, deputy secretary-general of the China Air Transport Association.
The federal PreCheck program that allows frequent fliers who provide personal data to speed through airport security will expand to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport this year. The program, which is limited to frequent fliers with American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, will also expand to airports in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Minneapolis-St. Paul. It is in place in Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta and Detroit airports.
Air France, which continues to offer its premium-economy class across much of its fleet, has just completed installation on six Airbus A380s. "Premium economy is a separate cabin located between the economy- and business-class cabins, with fixed-shell seats that recline to 123 degrees, have a 38-inch pitch and an individual video screen offering 500 hours of programs on demand," this feature says.
AMR Corp., the parent company of American Airlines, announced plans to retain 19 aircraft for which the company owes $10.2 million. AMR filed for bankruptcy in November with listed debts of nearly $30 billion. AMR "believes that the market values of, and market leases for, many of the aircraft have changed substantially since the aircraft were originally leased or financed," the company said in a filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
