Hospitals have introduced several programs that help nurses deal with compassion fatigue, a combination of secondary traumatic stress and burnout. Programs including one at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis address the issue through staff retreats, support groups and discussions on complicated patient scenarios. "Recognizing, managing and relieving these issues are critical for nurses and their employers," said Holly Carpenter, senior staff specialist at the American Nurses Association's Center for Occupational and Environmental Health.
