Poachers have stolen rhinoceros horns from ornamental heads in museums and other facilities across Europe and British officials warned zoos that their live rhinos may be poachers' next targets. Rhinoceros horns are incorrectly rumored to cure cancer and an average size horn is worth roughly $200,000. Rhinoceros poaching in South Africa reached an all-time high of 448 animals in 2011.
