Maryland recently celebrated Farm to School Week. One school district marked the week by providing students with samples of locally grown food, including zucchini and eggplant, donated from area farms.

Beverages that contain high-fructose corn syrup lead to a higher blood level of fructose than those that contain sucrose or regular sugar, U.S. researchers reported in the journal Metabolism. The study also found that drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup cause a higher uric acid level and a greater increase in systolic blood pressure.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will hold public hearings on a plan to improve the safety of leafy greens such as spinach. The proposal would enforce standards for producing, handling and inspecting the greens, but some say it could put small growers out of business.
