A new report by STR and AH&LA based on hotel data from 2009 to 2011 reveals that hotel-room discounts to online travel agencies amounted to about $2.7 billion, compared with about $2.4 billion in 2009 and $1.3 billion paid as travel-agent commissions through global distribution systems. The new data, presented during the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles, highlight the growing concern among hotels about their control of room distribution and costs as this channel continues to rise in popularity among consumers. OTA representatives responded to the report by pointing out the services' advertising efforts and other programs that help lift hotel occupancy.
