British researchers have discovered several new marine species around hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor near Antarctica, areas where the ambient water temperature can reach 382 C and animals survive without sunlight, using chemicals instead. "The first survey of these particular vents ... has revealed a hot, dark, lost world in which whole communities of previously unknown marine organisms thrive," said Oxford researcher Alex Rogers.
