Stenting in combination with an embolic protection device resulted in lower complication rates for high-risk carotid artery disease patients, according to a University of Wisconsin clinical trial. The study was meant to evaluate Emboshield Pro, a device used with stenting to open blocked vessels and capture dislodged plaque. "This is very good news for high-risk patients suffering with carotid artery disease, who only a decade ago had limited treatment options and poor long-term outcomes," said Dr. Jon Matsumura, the lead researcher.
