Companies such as Alcoa and HSBC are factoring sustainable-business successes into end-of-year bonuses. Alcoa set aside 20% of its bonus payments for CSR-related payouts, primarily focusing on greenhouse-gas emissions and safety, explains sustainability chief Kevin Anton. "I think it's important for businesses to self-regulate and find their own opportunities for self-improvement," he says.
