A 1,640-foot safety zone should be formed around the two drilling vessels that Royal Dutch Shell intends to deploy for its Alaskan offshore-drilling project, according to a proposal by the U.S. Coast Guard. "Placing a safety zone around the [mobile offshore drilling unit] will significantly reduce the threat of collisions that could result in oil spills and releases of natural gas and thereby protect the safety of life, property and the environment," the Coast Guard said in the proposal.
