Utility companies in Turin, Italy, and Huntsville, Ala., have integrated their respective engineering and GIS systems using spatial databases. The two cities are each using a suite of tools allowing them to integrate location data with enterprise resource planning tools, enabling the companies to trim costs and improve productivity. "The goal of this project from day one has been to have a single source of data available to anyone who manages or supports the utility networks in any function, be that planning, engineering design, field engineering, customer service and more," said Mario Cipriano of Turin's IREN Energia.
