Data on 1,139 patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes showed that only 464 patients attained A1C levels of less than 7% within an average of five months of starting insulin therapy. The study in Diabetes Care found the mean A1C level at insulin initiation was 8.2% in those who met the goal of A1C rates lower than 7%, compared with 9.2% in those who did not meet the target.
