The changing role of the United States on the world stage is making higher education more important than ever, but state support for colleges and universities has fallen in the last few decades, writes Macalester College geographer William G. Moseley. Besides increasing tuition, the nature of higher education is changing; for example, online classes are becoming more prevalent, he writes. "The result of these changes is that higher education is increasingly out of reach for many Americans, and the product being offered is qualitatively different than it was in the past," he writes.
