The Food and Drug Administration, which began testing orange juice imports for carbendazim, said 77 shipments out of 106 tested did not contain the fungicide. Twelve shipments from Brazil and 12 from Canada were detained or denied entry because carbendazim was detected.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has introduced a bill that would raise the tax on bottled drinks from 2 cents to 5 cents. Retailers and the beverage industry oppose the plan, with Rob Santoni, CFO of Santoni's grocery store saying, "She's picking on our industry because we're an easy target. It's easier to collect than property taxes and water bills."
Companies are offering pleasant-tasting green drinks made with supplements spirulina, a healthy bacteria; and chlorella, a kind of algae. Some contain small amounts of green vegetables while others do not.
Pratik Pota, who joined PepsiCo India Beverages in 2005, has been named CEO of NourishCo Beverages, a joint venture between PepsiCo and Tata Global. The joint venture, announced in 2010, is developing noncarbonated beverages with health and wellness elements, starting with Tata Water Plus, launched in January.
Red Bull Total Zero is set for an April launch, marking the first product extension since the energy shot was launched in 2009. Red Bull says the zero-calorie drink will "further drive incremental sales for the brand and further invigorate the energy drink category with a premium new offering."
