Many people who have dedicated their lives to horses support the reinstatement of horse-slaughter plants in the U.S. The AVMA estimates the annual cost of caring for a horse is $1,825, not including veterinary and farrier costs. Financial strain and lack of other options have led to horses being abandoned and starved or inhumanely transported to Canada and Mexico where slaughter plants are not regulated.
