Psychiatrist Dr. William Lamers Jr., a pioneer in the U.S. hospice movement, died Feb. 2, at the age of 80, at home under hospice care. After a friend died of cancer confined to a hospital in the early 1970s, Lamers initially thought about opening a grief counseling center but was encouraged to start a hospice by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, author of "On Death and Dying."
