Data on nearly 30,000 Medicare beneficiaries showed an annual spending increase of $230 and $271 per person among overweight and obese patients, respectively, between 1997 and 2006, compared to $122 per person for normal-weight people. Chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure also contribute to higher Medicare expenditures, researchers reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
