Healthy mice developed symptoms of liver disease and got fatter when they shared the same cage with mice engineered to have a particular immune deficiency, suggesting that obesity may actually be infectious, a study in the journal Nature found. Mice with altered immune systems had an imbalance of microbes in their stomachs and a 1,000-fold increase in disease-associated bacteria, which were transmitted to their healthy counterparts.
