Data collection and data restructuring are the keys that have allowed Pinterest to introduce useful and appealing personalized e-commerce. Where other efforts at predicting consumers' wants and needs have fallen short, Pinterest "is the first company to nail e-commerce personalization because they understand the importance of having an interface, which matches what the user is there to do," writes Nir Eyal, an adviser to several Bay Area incubators.
