With more spas and salons offering cosmetic procedures and a patchwork of state regulations governing safety and licensing, patients need to do their homework before seeking cosmetic procedures, says Joseph Merola, a dermatologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Spas should at least have a physician on-site in case complications arise, and it's a good idea for patients to have a consultation with a dermatologist first, Merola says.
