Squid that have been observed "flying" through the air were generally believed to be escaping predators, but new information suggests they may actually be conserving energy during migration. Using rapid-succession photos of a squid traveling in the air, scientists discovered the animals' rate of movement in the air was five times faster than their propulsion through the water, even though the squid used the same mechanism to move in both instances.
