Groups such as the Environmental Defense Fund may point out the possible environmental dangers of hydraulic fracturing, but they still believe that natural gas is a "bridge fuel" that can push the U.S. toward energy independence, writes columnist Joe Nocera. He cites the EDF's conclusion that "the U.S. shale gas resource has enormous potential to provide economic and environmental benefits for the country." The EDF also believes that a state-based approach to fracking regulation would be more effective than a federal one, Nocera writes.
