Drugs designed to block the enzyme BACE1 and prevent plaque formation characteristic of Alzheimer's pathology may actually alter brain electrical circuitry and negatively impact axon development, affecting memory, smell and possibly other areas of the brain, according to a new mice study at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. Researchers believe the drugs may be beneficial at certain doses, but the potential negative effects must be monitored.
