Hospitality consortium Leading Hotels of the World is offering chocolate-themed specials at various member hotels across the world to help couples celebrate Valentine's Day. Offers include chocolate spa treatments at Hotel Sacher Wien in Vienna and chocolate-making classes at the Windsor Hotel TOYA Resort & Spa in Hokkaido, Japan.
Children born to mothers with gestational diabetes who were breast-fed for at least six months showed a slower BMI growth in later years, compared with their counterparts who were breast-fed for less than six months, according to a study in the International Journal of Obesity. Researchers noted similar results in children born to women who did not have diabetes during pregnancy.
Smart Balance is focusing on heart health this month, adding a "For Your Heart" section to its website with food plans and an online community. The site, which also has recipes, heart-health tips and coupons, allows visitors to make and send personalized digital Valentine's Day cards. "We see American Heart Month as an opportunity to bring heart health to the forefront," said John Becker, vice president of marketing at Smart Balance.
Beans, blueberries, tomatoes, citrus fruits and nuts are among the 10 foods recommended for people with diabetes by the American Diabetes Association. Also on the list are sweet potatoes, dark leafy vegetables, whole grains, fat-free dairy products and fish that's high in omega-3 fatty acids.
