A new tablet-computer mobile application being developed and tested by a graduate student at Vanderbilt University is meant to help students who cannot see or who have visual impairments learn math and other subjects that include strong visual components. The app utilizes haptic -- or tactile -- technology, assigning vibrations and sounds of varying frequencies to different features, such as the horizontal or vertical lines on an X-Y grid.
