The first step to reducing extra sugar in a child's diet is knowing where it comes from, such as soda and baked goods, but food labels may not always be a big help, writes registered dietitian Elizabeth Ward. Public-health groups have asked the FDA to require manufacturers to list added-sugar content. In the meantime, parents can serve water or low-fat milk instead of soda, avoid processed or packaged foods, and choose low-sugar cereals and naturally sweetened products.
