Inactivating the FoxO1 protein -- which regulates gene expression and cell size, viability and metabolism -- helped maintain heart function in mice with diabetes that had a high-fat diet, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. "If we can prevent FoxO1 from being overactive, then there is a chance that we can protect the hearts of patients with diabetes," said researcher Dr. Joseph Hill.
