Education consultant Ben Johnson suggests in this blog post that teachers help students use writing as a learning tool. Writing to learn, which focuses on what the writer gets out of the process, should begin by asking students to read other people's works and adopt their styles. Eventually, students will be able to reflect on the work and determine what effect they, as the writer, have on their own writing.
