University of Calgary researchers reported that when ICU beds were not available, 12% of hospitalized patients were admitted to the unit within two hours, compared with 21% when three or more beds were free. The study in the Archives of Internal Medicine said when ICU units were full, care goals changed from resuscitation to medical or comfort care in 15% of cases, compared with 9% when three or more beds were available.
