Exposure to chemicals such as bisphenol A and DDT appeared to have fairly limited consequences as long as a person's body fat levels remain stable or increase. However, a study to be published in Physiology and Behaviour found intentional weight loss prompts the release of these chemicals into the bloodstream, which can result in suppressed thyroid function and lower resting metabolic rate, causing the body to burn fewer calories.
