Peeps, the iconic sugar-coated marshmallow treats, were first crafted by hand at the Rodda Candy Company, which Just Born acquired in 1953. While the original Peeps took 27 hours to create, and sported wings, Just Born automated the process using quick cooling technology in 1954 and cut production time to just six minutes. Today, the confectioner, which also owns the Mike and Ikes brand and Hot Tamales, makes 5.5 million Peeps daily.
