Online-learning programs run by single school districts are seen as the fastest-growing segment of the virtual-education movement. The growth is being driven, in part, by a desire to retain students who might otherwise choose out-of-district online schools. "We have students coming to us for a variety of reasons," said Randy Wood, principal of a new online school in Aurora, Colo. "Whether it's kids that just want to accelerate their high school learning, kids who are working full time to support their families or themselves, or students with medical conditions."
