In New Zealand, officials are hoping to increase interest among students in learning Mandarin Chinese by recruiting 22 new language assistants for the University of Auckland-based Confucius Institute. The government has a goal of educating 50,000 students in the language each year. "So many principals, teachers and parents now recognise that young New Zealanders need Mandarin for future employment and engagement with our close neighbour, China," director Nora Yao said.
