The New Jersey Department of Agriculture will not be purchasing "lean finely textured beef" for the state's schools next school year. The move follows controversy surrounding the product, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture says is safe, and how it is made. "People don't like the idea of ammonia being used to treat their food, despite the fact that it is an approved process and approved additive," said Donald Schaffner, director of the Center for Advanced Food Technology at Rutgers University.
