Howard Schmidt, the Obama administration's point person on cybersecurity, said federal agencies need to focus on three cybersecurity priorities -- secure Internet communications, continuous network monitoring and robust authentication -- to protect U.S. government IT systems from malicious attack. Schmidt made the recommendations after consulting with representatives of the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Office of Management and Budget. He set a goal of 95% utilization of administration cybersecurity tools by 2014.
