The most common health concern affecting cats and dogs is obesity, writes veterinarian Kathy Gagliardi. Obesity can prompt muscle and skeletal issues in dogs, as well as compromise the immune system and cause cardiovascular issues and problems tolerating heat, exercise and glucose. In cats, diabetes, liver disease and premature death can occur, along with muscle and skeletal issues, Dr. Gagliardi notes.
