Grade 3 obese participants who underwent either gastric banding or bariatric bypass surgery showed similar improvements in body weight, blood glucose and insulin levels and triglycerides, a study in Diabetes Care indicated. However, only those in the bariatric bypass group attained significant increases in serum 7-alpha-OH-cholesterol levels, researchers noted.
Patients with hypertension who used a Web-based telemedicine portal generally got more timely treatment and adjustments in their medications, compared with people who made periodic office visits to treat their high blood pressure, according to research reported at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
Undergoing bariatric surgery may help curb heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths in obese patients, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed. Researchers studied 4,047 middle-aged, obese Swedish participants and noted 234 cardiovascular events and 49 cardiovascular deaths in those who received normal medical care, compared with only 199 events and 28 deaths in the surgery group.
