An on-site pathologist who can inspect tumors and lymph nodes immediately after removal may help reduce the need for breast cancer patients to undergo repeat surgery by 64%, according to a study in the American Journal of Surgery. Researchers examined 549 cancer patients and found that 25% of those who did not have an on-site pathologist for their first operation required a second surgery, compared with only 11% of those who had a pathologist present during the initial operation.
