The U.S. Navy has inaugurated a Washington, D.C., facility where it will recreate environments such as jungles and deserts to design and test a new generation of robots. The Laboratory for Autonomous Systems Research -- which features the world's largest real-time motion capture space by volume and a wave pool, among other things -- will be home to a series of robotics projects such as autonomous underwater vehicles and a robot that fights fires.
