Mosquitoes carrying heartworm disease, a parasitic condition potentially fatal for dogs and cats, will soon be buzzing around again, writes Indiana veterinarian Andrew W. Riebe. Though treatment exists for infected dogs, it is expensive and very difficult for the animal, and there are no approved treatments for cats. Dr. Riebe emphasizes that affordable monthly preventive medication is the best way to protect dogs and cats from heartworm disease.
