A $250 million water tunnel from Staten Island to Brooklyn will enhance reliability of drinking water in the area but will also benefit other port work. The harbor channel is being dredged to make it deeper; the Bayonne Bridge is being lifted to accommodate larger ships. "If we want our region's maritime terminals to stay competitive, then it is important that we be able to accommodate those new megaships and their full loads," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
